Another successful RACEfest in the books!

The 15th Annual D’Arcy Motors RACEfest to benefit the Mike Guglielmucci Sr. Racers Benevolent Fund has come and gone and once again it was a resounding success. There were plenty of both racers and race fans on hand to help make the event successful once again. 1983 Indy 500 winner Tom Sneva headlined the event along with his brother, 1977 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year, Jerry Sneva. Indy drivers Paul Goldsmith and Tom Bagley, Stock Car and Indy driver Sal Tovella, 1995 Chili Bowl winner and Indy Car driver Donnie Beechler and 9-time USAC Midget champ Ron “Sleepy” Tripp were also on hand to help raise funds and sign autographs.

Donations from local businesses like D’Arcy Motors, City Beverage/Budweiser and 7 UP aided in raising just over $22,000.00 . Race memorabilia such as autographed helmets and race car body parts were donated from race car drivers both on the national and local level. A Chicago Blackhawks jersey autographed by the entire 2008-2009 team, a Dayton 500 book autographed by several of the race legends as well as several autographed photos and prints all for silent auction and a live auctions throughout the evening.

As is done each year at RACEfest; scholarships ($6,000.00 overall) were awarded to12 very deserving Joliet Junior College Automotive students.

Each year at RACEfest the fund hands out a special award called the “Eagle Award” to an individual who has made a significant contribution to local auto racing. This years Eagle Award was presented to the late Tom Arthur of New Lenox, for his countless hours of promoting local midget auto racing as the public relations and public address announcer for both the United Midget Auto Racing Association and the Illini Racing Series. Arthur was also very knowledgeable in the history of local midget auto racing and served on the board of directors for the Mazon Speedbowl, Grundy County Speedway Hall of Fame. The award was accepted by Arthur’s girlfriend Sue Douvon.

The board of directors is already hard at work looking at ways to make the 16th Annual RACEfest, in 2010, a much bigger and better event. At the same time we are also gearing up for our annual Golf Outing coming on Thursday, September 17th at the Inwood Golf Course in Joliet.

We have also been very busy looking for new ways to get our name out to the racing public on a national level, so that we can help out more injured racers and their families with the funds that all of you have so generously helped us raise. We have already partnered up with a very popular racing website called www.MidgetMadness.com and have a couple of other things in the works as well.

A huge thank you goes out to all who helped with and attended RACEfest #15. We look forward to seeing many of you at our golf outing in the Fall and to seeing all of you at the racetracks this Summer and at the 16th Annual RACEfest in 2010.
